Michael’s research focuses on global change biology in general, and the resistance resilience and vulnerability of ecosystems in particular, especially as they respond to disturbances such as atmospheric warming, hurricanes, and land use change. The multidisciplinary institute that he directs includes the Office of Sustainability, Center for Environmental Sciences & Engineering, Connecticut State Museum of Natural History, and Natural Resources Conservation Academy, as well as over 175 affiliated faculty members from all disciplinary domains of the university. With a BS and PhD from the University of Pittsburgh, he has published over 250 scholarly articles and 9 books or monographs, and has benefited from three decades of continuous support from the National Science Foundation’s Long-Term Ecological Research Program.
