The UConn School of Business CIBER, Department of Management, the BCLC and the International Business Association have created this program in partnership with the Connecticut District Export Council to promote knowledge about exporting to students who may wish to have this additional skill for their resumes and potential internships. In a global economy, knowledge of exporting logistics and compliance is crucial for businesses of all sizes, as 95% of all consumers live outside the U.S. Achieving this certificate will help prepare students to assist an SME (Small to Medium size Enterprise) to either begin or expand their exporting capabilities.
The certificate program has three required components for successful completion:
1) Attend the Kick-off program (Time/Location TBA mid-Sept). Program includes a panel of experts and the screening of the FBI produced movie, “Made in America”.
Panel includes:
Anthony Sargis – U.S. Dept of Commerce
Jose Abrantes – Export Compliance Officer for OFS
Samuel Chaney – FedEx Trade Networks Transport & Brokerage
Jenny Norris – Meridian Financial Group and Exim Bank
The FBI movie tells the story of the formation of a powerful partnership between the FBI, a U.S. manufacturing company, and an informant willing to serve against a nuclear proliferation network. “Made in America” is based on a real investigation involving an Iranian proliferation network; however, the lessons learned are country agnostic and the “red flags” highlighted apply to all countries whose proliferation of exported, dual-use technologies could cause harm to our Nation’s security
2) View four out of seven webinars listed below. You must complete a quiz for each viewed webinar. The webinars are available on YouTube. CT DEC Export Compliance Webinars. After watching a chosen webinar, please click on the links below to take the corresponding quiz via Qualtrics. Students can complete these at their own pace, so long as this requirement is satisfied by the end of the spring semester.
Webinar choices are:
- BIS Introduction
- OFAC Overview
- Cybersecurity IT
- Consideration for exporting to China
- Foreign Corrupt Practices Act
- Export controls at trade shows
- Creating an effective export management compliance program
3) Award Ceremony in March. Date and time TBD.
The program runs from October to March of the academic year. To participate, please come to the Export Professional Panel & FBI movie showing on October (TBA mid-Sept). If unable to attend, you may also begin the certificate program by viewing the webinars and taking the quizzes. If you have questions about this program, please contact the Global Business Programs Office at CIBER.business@uconn.edu.
