Export Professional Development

Global Business Programs has created this professional development program in partnership with the Connecticut District Export Council to promote knowledge about exporting to students who may wish to have additional skills for their résumés and potential internships. In a global economy, knowledge of exporting from marketing and financing to logistics and compliance is crucial for businesses of all sizes, since 95% of all consumers live outside the U.S. Completing one or more of these tracks will help prepare students to assist an SME (Small to Medium size Enterprise) to begin or expand their exporting capabilities.

The program is open to any UConn student. To participate, please email global.business@uconn.edu. Once you have contacted Global Business Programs, you may begin the program. First watch the FBI movie and take the quiz. You may then begin Export Basics. You can complete the remaining tracks in the order you prefer, but we recommend saving Compliance 1 & 2 until the end. The content for these two tracks is quite dense and completing the other tracks will increase your understanding for those. A student colleague will track your progress through the program and update you via email. Once you have successfully finished a track you will receive a digital certificate for the complete track.  Please allow 2-3 weeks for Global Business Programs staff to confirm your completion.

The Export Basics Certificate is suitable for beginners seeking an overview of exporting before defining a more specific knowledge base with the other Export Certificates.

The Export Logistics Certificate This certificate builds on the skills developed through Export Basics. It examines export documentation, inco terms, specific shipping issues related to specific country destinations.

The Export Finance Certificate builds on the skills developed through the Export Basics Certificate. It examines payment terms, risk management, SBA and Exim Bank financing, and more.

The Market Intelligence Certificate is suitable for gaining more specific knowledge of how to enter international markets.

Export Compliance I introduces specific topics in Export Compliance, including BIS, OFAC, Cybersecurity IT, etc. It explores special considerations for export controls at trade shows, the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, and more. Knowledge in export compliance is increasingly in demand as companies navigate the complicated rules and laws (as you saw in the FBI movie). Most companies have to train their compliance officers from the ground up, so a student who has experience in this area will be an attractive intern and have an advantage over peers who have no export knowledge.

Export Compliance II includes an advanced exploration of export compliance. It builds on the skills introduced in Export Compliance Certificate I, as well as provides guidance regarding destination control statements, site visits, and export controls in the cloud.
